This program is based on a program I ran for a school here on St. John. In 2001/2002, K – 9 students at the Julius E. Sprauve School (JESS) learned the joy of sharing by helping a needy school and its students in Africa. JESS adopted the Merrueshi Primary School - a school that is run by the Maasai in Kenya.
A daring goal was set, of $10,000. The JESS students conducted special programs and events throughout the year to raise funds and at the year’s end, the students had raised $7,813.55! The three other schools on island and the community members also made donations, bringing the school’s total to their goal of $10,000.
We raised money through the following activities:
- We collected change
- Hike-a-thon with sponsors (4th grade and up)
- Hug-a-thon with sponsors, (K-3rd grades)
- A 3rd-grade talent show for a sell-out crowd
- A silent auction of beautiful mosaic mirror frame made by MIS Intermediate Class
I can help you start a similar project in your school.
