This day celebrates the founding of the Organization of African Unity which occurred on May 25, 1963. There were 32 independent African nations that signed the founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2002 the organization was renamed the African Union, and now has 53 members that represent all the independent countries that make up the continent.
